Taylor and Enterprise Holdings give $25 million for endowed scholarships

Jack C. Taylor, philanthropist and founder of Enterprise Holdings, has given WUSTL $25 million for undergraduate scholarships on behalf of the company, Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton announced. The gift will be added to the existing endowed scholarship fund that was established in 2001 by Enterprise Holdings, the parent company of Enterprise Rent-A-Car, National Car Rental and Alamo Rent A Car. Mouse genome unveils clues to human cancers

By sequencing the genome of a mouse with cancer, researchers at the School of Medicine have uncovered mutations that also drive cancer in humans. The investigators are the first to sequence a mouse cancer genome, and their research was reported online this week in the Journal of Clinical Investigation. FULL STORY

Hidden federal bailouts benefit businesses

The federal financial bailouts of the past few years received tremendous publicity, but multiple sources of “hidden bailouts” eluded notice, says Cheryl D. Block, JD, professor of law. Hidden sources include new, expanded tax credits, the more liberal IRS interpretation of regulations, and “off-off budget” bailouts by quasi-governmental agencies such as the Federal Reserve Bank, according to Block’s research.  FULL STORY

Obituary: Charles L. Leven, 82, economics professor emeritus

Charles L. Leven, PhD, emeritus professor of economics in Arts & Sciences, died Tuesday, March 15, 2011, in Chicago. Leven spent nearly 30 years in the department until his retirement in 1991. He was an expert in urban economics. FULL STORY

  • Softball benefits from home cooking. A doubleheader sweep of Blackburn College March 23 was the softball team’s ninth win in the past 10 games and fifth of six wins on its current 12-game homestand. The team is 16-5-1 overall and looks to continue the home streak Saturday, March 26, with a doubleheader against Milliken University.
